William Folliott (the Weaver) was born in 1835 in the Bethnal Green area of London, likely in modest circumstances. He refused to speak of his origins to his children. He studied and taught at the Spitalfields School of Design from 1851-7, winning design competitions as a student. He married Jane Flexon in 1857 with whom he fathered 15 children. He raised his family in the Forestgate area of London in some comfort, having distinguished himself.
